Tim O’Hara Casey a Firefighter / Paramedica: Firefighters live a dangerous life of firefighting and saving lives, he relates his personal firefighting stories of life and death in the fire service.
About team work and leadership in the fire service and how what we do as firefighters can be used to demonstrate for the private sector the importance of both team work and leadership.
We as firefighters can not extinguish a fire by ourselves without team work, selflessness, cooperation, and lack of ego.
If and when we make a mistake it could lead to the death of a citizen or a firefighter, there is no room for credit in what we do.
Our leaders have to be actual leaders because they lead us into extremely dangerous environments, if we don’t believe in them it is hard to follow them.
When we do follow our leaders we are actually following them because we all go in together and we all come out together, we trust our leaders with our lives.
It is not life and death in the private sector most of the time. In the corporate world there is always time to make decisions, have meetings, do research, and dedicate time to the work.
Gut feelings are ignored and suppressed and all the times dedicated to thoroughness can lead to the problem of over thinking every detail of a project until it fails even with all that effort and time.
Timothy O. Casey on how to make very rapid decisions with limited information as a way of freeing the minds of the participants and opening up their attitudes and thought process in a fun and engaging environment.
